Top 5 Carnival Parties of 2012

For 2 days in August, a pretty swanky corner of West London hosts the greatest party on earth. Notting Hill Carnival is the highlight of the year. Busting moves to Norman Jay at the Good Times stage, getting jerk chicken everywhere but your mouth, transforming your body into a machine that can drink beer without ever needing to go to the toilet… there are some traditions worth keeping.

We’re talking the biggest festival in Europe. Why restrict yourself to 2 days? We’ve rounded up the best five of the pre- and post-Carnival parties of the Bank Holiday weekend.

Unleash @ Lightbox as part of The Upfront Project

Blunted @ Fire as part of The Upfront Project

The Upfront Project continues to shape the musical landscape of London with another week of beats in Vauxhall’s Lightbox and Fire clubs. Taken over by promoters Unleash and Blunted, this week showcases the best in hip hop from London and further afield. At Fire, the Blunted crew showcase the talents of Egyptian Lover, HouseShoes, Jazzy Jay, DJ Rashad & Spinn, Johnny Dub, Murky, Wolf Hood and Laurent Fintoni, while at Lightbox, Room 1 will be dedicated to Life&Death favourites ClockworkAvatism and much loved Unleashed residents Deep-Lo. Room 2 will be taken over by Frivolous who will be playing his incredible live set in which everything from knives to phones are instruments. He’ll be supported by Pablo Cahn and Ibellini.

Vagabondz Carnival Warm-Up @ Koko / Tickets & Info:

In an attic somewhere, there’s an event locked up getting uglier. Just look: Congo Natty with Full Live Band, The Bug Ft. Flowdan & Daddy Freddy, Channel One, General Levy, Lady Chann, Buggsy, Tenor Fly, Nanci & Phoebe, Congo Dubz, 2nice and Marf. If that lineup doesn’t make you smile, nothing will. It’s worth going for the sunshine vibes of Congo Natty alone, but Channel One celebrating 30 years of Carnival and The Bug doing an live set with Flowdan? Yes.

Urban Nerds Carnival Special @ Scala
 / Tickets & Info:

The wonderful fellas at Urban Nerds have put together one of the most cracking lineups we’ve seen in a long time, ensuring you get a serious return on the measly £8 entry. Breakage & MC Wrec, Mala & Coki, Kode9, Jackmaster, True Tiger, Marcus Nasty & Shantie, Rattus Rattus & IC3, The Heatwave, Ragga Twins, Uncle Dugs, Terror Danjah, Fonti & Bushkin, Champion, Sunship & MC RB, White Tyson, Collapse, Alruii, Dozy and Native - in true Carnival style, it’s the biggest, brightest and boldest celebration of all things bass. Yum.

Deviation @ Paradise / Tickets & Info:
After last year’s epic double header with both parties in both East and West London, Deviation return to Paradise on Kilburn Lane to take over both floors on carnival Monday with a lineup that includes Zinc, Benji B, Toddla T, Oneman, Semtex, Martelo, IG Culture, Ronnie Herel, Ossieand some surprise guests who, if that lineup is anything to go by, are bound to be brilliant.
So that’s your weekend sorted then.
